Dental implants are an excellent way to replace missing teeth. An implant is a small titanium post that will be placed into the jawbone to anchor a crown or denture.
First, the dentist will request some x-rays to evaluate the amount of the bone before selecting the right implant for you. If you don’t have enough bone to hold the implant, an additional procedure, bone grafting, can be done previously or in the same day of the implant placement.
Some patients can have the implants and replacement teeth placed all in one visit. Most patients, however, will need to wait a few months for the bone to grow around the implant to support it firmly (osseointegration).
Before placing the artificial teeth, the dentist will take a mold of the implant and use that to customize the connection between the implant and your new teeth.
The final replacement teeth are typically placed after a few months. In the meantime, the dentist can fabricate a temporary crown/denture to help with function and aesthetics until the final teeth are ready.
Dental implants may be the best option for you. They are an excellent long-term option for restoring your smile.
